UNDERSTANDING THE SENSE OF URGENCY IN THE REAL WORLD
6. Opportunity Windows
Why Are We Learning This?
Many students believe that opportunities remain available until somebody formally closes them.
Real life rarely works that way.
Most opportunities do not disappear suddenly.
They gradually become smaller.
They become more competitive.
They become less accessible.
And eventually they disappear altogether.
The challenge is that opportunity windows are often invisible.
There is no alarm.
No warning siren.
No official announcement.
The opportunity simply moves on.
Understanding opportunity windows is therefore one of the most important reasons for developing a sense of urgency.

What Is An Opportunity Window?
An opportunity window is a limited period during which a particular action, decision, relationship, or opportunity is most likely to create value.
In simple words:
Some opportunities have a "best before" date.
The opportunity may still exist later.
But its value may reduce.
Its accessibility may reduce.
Or it may disappear completely.

The Train Example
Imagine standing on a railway platform.
The train arrives.
Passengers board.
The train departs.
The opportunity to board existed only for a limited time.
After departure, the train is gone.
Life contains many such trains.
The difference is that most of them are less visible.

The Scholarship Example
A student learns about a scholarship.
Applications are open for thirty days.
During those thirty days, the opportunity is available.
After the deadline, the scholarship may still exist.
But not for that student.
The opportunity window has closed.

The Internship Example
Many students begin searching for internships after examinations end.
Others begin months earlier.
The second group often gets access to:
- Better organizations.
- Better mentors.
- Better projects.
By the time the first group begins searching, many opportunities have already been filled.
The opportunity did not disappear.
The window simply closed.

The Farmer Example
Farmers understand opportunity windows naturally.
If sowing occurs within the right period, the crop benefits.
If sowing is delayed excessively, the season continues moving forward.
The same land exists.
The same farmer exists.
The same crop exists.
But the opportunity window has changed.
Nature operates through windows.
Many professional opportunities do as well.

The Relationship Example
Not all opportunities involve money or careers.
Suppose a student meets an inspiring mentor.
The first few conversations create an opportunity to build a relationship.
If the student follows up, remains engaged, and stays connected, the relationship may grow.
If the student remains inactive for years, the opportunity often weakens.
The person still exists.
The relationship window may not.

Why Students Often Miss Opportunity Windows
Because many opportunities appear ordinary when they first arrive.
Examples:
- An invitation to volunteer.
- A guest lecture.
- A workshop.
- An internship.
- A networking event.
- A conversation with an industry expert.
Students often think:
"I will do something like this later."
Unfortunately, later may not offer the same opportunity.

The Campus Example
A student spends three years in college.
During that time:
- Professors are available.
- Student clubs are active.
- Friends are nearby.
- Campus events take place.
- Internships are accessible.
After graduation, many of these opportunities become much harder to access.
The opportunity window was the college years themselves.
Many people realize this only after leaving.

The Job Market Example
Some industries grow rapidly for a period of time.
New jobs emerge.
New businesses emerge.
New skills become valuable.
People who recognize these trends early often benefit greatly.
Those who arrive late may still participate, but under very different conditions.
Timing matters.

Opportunity Windows Are Not Always Obvious
This is what makes them difficult.
When a door closes, people notice.
When a window gradually narrows, people often do not.
Most opportunity windows close quietly.
No announcement is made.
No notification appears.
Life simply moves forward.

The Digital World Illusion
The internet often creates an impression that opportunities are unlimited.
Thousands of jobs.
Thousands of courses.
Thousands of videos.
Thousands of connections.
This abundance is real.
Yet many valuable opportunities remain time-sensitive.
The job may be available today.
Not tomorrow.
The mentor may have time today.
Not tomorrow.
The market may be growing today.
Not tomorrow.
Abundance does not eliminate timing.

The Startup Example
A founder identifies an emerging trend.
Customers are becoming interested.
Competition is limited.
Awareness is growing.
This period often represents an opportunity window.
If action happens early, advantages may be significant.
If action happens years later, the landscape may look completely different.

Why Professionals Think Differently
Students often ask:
Is this opportunity good?
Professionals often ask:
How long will this opportunity remain available?
The second question changes behaviour.
It introduces urgency.
It introduces action.
It introduces timing.

The Cost of Waiting
Waiting is not always wrong.
Sometimes waiting is wise.
The problem arises when people wait without understanding the nature of the opportunity.
Questions worth asking include:
- Is this opportunity growing or shrinking?
- Will it become easier later?
- Will it become harder later?
- What might change if I delay?
These questions help us assess opportunity windows more accurately.

The Opportunity Window Exercise
Think about your current life.
List three opportunities available to you today.
Examples:
- Learning a skill.
- Building a professional network.
- Applying for internships.
- Improving communication.
- Working with a mentor.
Now ask:
What makes this opportunity available today?
What might make it less available next year?
What action can I take this week?
This simple exercise develops awareness of opportunity windows.

Opportunity Windows and Regret
Many regrets in life do not come from failure.
They come from opportunities that were never pursued.
People often say:
- "I should have applied."
- "I should have attended."
- "I should have learned."
- "I should have started earlier."
In many cases, the issue was not capability.
The issue was timing.

Final Thought
Life is full of opportunities.
But opportunities do not remain equally available forever.
Some stay open for years.
Some stay open for months.
Some stay open for days.
And some stay open for only a single conversation.
One of the most important signs of professional maturity is learning to recognize these windows while they are still open.
Because the value of an opportunity is determined not only by what it is.
But also by when it appears.
And whether we are prepared to act before the window closes.
