Live Fencing with Thorny Bushes & Trenches

1. What is this item?

Live fencing involves planting hardy, thorny shrubs or climbers along the farm boundary—often supported by shallow trenches or bunds to aid root establishment and moisture retention. Species like karonda, cactus, agave, jatropha, mehendi, bamboo, or bougainvillea are popular choices. Trenches are also used as natural barriers and can double up for water harvesting.

2. How is the Quantity Estimated?

• Measured in running meters of boundary

• Planting distance: typically 1 plant per 1–1.5 meters

• Trench: 30–60 cm wide and deep, continuous along the fence

• Requires additional spacing for double rows or mixed species (optional)

3. What are the Cost Components?

• Bush saplings or stem cuttings (₹5–₹30 per plant depending on type)

• Trench digging (manual or JCB)

• Organic manure + soil improvement

• Watering setup (manual or drip) for establishment phase

• Initial fencing (temporary) to protect young plants

• Labor for plantation & maintenance (initial 6 months)

4. What are the Going Rates & Per Unit Cost?

• Average cost for live fence with trenching: ₹100–₹160 per running meter

(lower side if labor is local and species are propagated in-farm)

• With double-row planting and partial drip: ₹180–₹250/meter

👉 Example: For 720 meters of boundary at ₹150/m =

720 × 150 = ₹1,08,000

🔄 Benefits:

• Natural barrier, low maintenance after 1st year

• Enhances soil biodiversity, reduces erosion

• Some species offer fruits, fuelwood, or fencing material

🔍 Caution: Needs regular pruning and guarding in the first year, but pays off in durability & aesthetics!
