Raised Bed Poly Tunnel/ Low Tunnels (Mini Tunnels)

1. What is this item?

A low-height, semi-circular or hoop-shaped tunnel placed directly over specially prepared raised soil beds, covered with UV-stabilized transparent or semi-transparent polyethylene film.

It creates a mini greenhouse effect right on the beds — keeping the soil warm, moisture levels perfect, and shielding crops from wind, rain, and pests.

Best suited for:

• Off-season vegetable farming (cucumber, melon, spinach)

• Early transplantations

• Protecting sensitive young plants in unpredictable weather

2. How is the Quantity Estimated?

• Number of raised beds × tunnel length needed per bed

• Standard raised bed dimensions:

o Width: 1–1.2 meters

o Height: 15–30 cm (soil level above normal ground)

• Tunnel width: just enough to cover the bed snugly (usually 1.5 meters)

• Tunnel height: 1.0–1.2 meters (not for walking inside)

• Length per tunnel: 20–40 meters usually

📏 You calculate length × number of beds to estimate total material needed.

3. What are the Cost Components?

• Flexible GI wire or pipe hoops (12–16 mm thick)

• Transparent polyfilm (micron-rated for agriculture use)

• Clips or tying material to fasten the film to the frame

• Side anchoring (simple bricks, soil mounds, pegs)

• Raised bed preparation (if manually done = labor cost; or machine-assisted)

⛏️ Some farmers also add drip lines inside tunnels to maintain micro-irrigation.

4. What are the Going Rates & Unit Cost?

Type of Tunnel Approx. Cost (per meter) Full Setup (30 m)

DIY Manual ₹180–₹280 ₹5,400–₹8,400

Professional-grade ₹300–₹400 ₹9,000–₹12,000

💡 Costs can vary a bit based on:

• Thickness & quality of polyfilm

• Distance between supporting hoops (closer = stronger = costlier)
