National Beekeeping Honey Mission (NBHM)

“Navigating the Government Connect: Unlock Grants, Subsidies, Policy Alignment & Zero-Cost Growth Opportunities”

Budget 2025-26: MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND FARMERS WELFARE; DEMAND NO. 1; Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare…

12. National Beekeeping Honey Mission (NBHM):..National Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM) is being implemented for overall promotion and development of scientific beekeeping in mission mode to achieve the goal of 'Sweet Revolution' in the country by giving thrust capacity building and training, specific focus on women, input support for promotion and production, setting up Integrated Beekeeping Development Centres (IBDCs), other infrastructure, digitization/online registration, processing, value addition, market support, etc. and R&D under 3 Mini Mission (MMs).

Part 1: Salient Features (2025-26)

• Key Components:

o MM-I (R&D): Strengthening research via KVIC/NBB

o MM-II (Production): Distributing 10 lakh bee colonies & setting up 50 IBDCs

o MM-III (Market Linkages): Branding “Honey Mission” & e-platforms

• Targets:

o Train 50,000 beekeepers (40% women)

o Increase hive productivity from 20kg to 35kg/year

o Establish 10 FPOs dedicated to honey

Part 2: Startup Opportunities – Hive to Market

1. Smart Apiary Management

• Opportunity: IoT-enabled hive monitors tracking:

o Honey yield (ml/day)

o Queen bee health (via sound analytics)

o Pest alerts (Varroa mite detection)

• Alignment: Qualifies for 50% subsidy under NBHM’s input support.

2. Women-Centric Beekeeping Kits

• Design: Lightweight, ergonomic hives (<5kg) + protective gear for SHGs

• Revenue Model:

o Lease-to-SHG (₹200/hive/month)

o NBHM subsidy claim processing fee (₹500/kit)

3. Honey Blockchain Traceability

• Tech Stack: QR codes linking honey batches to:

o Geotagged apiaries

o Pollen source analytics

o FSSAI test reports

• Market Edge: Commands 20% premium for export-grade honey.

4. AI-Powered Pollination Services

• Model: Match farmers needing pollination (e.g., apple orchards) with migratory beekeepers

• Platform Fee: 15% of pollination contracts (avg. ₹5,000/acre)

5. Bee Product Value Addition

• Innovations:

o Propolis-based nutraceuticals

o Beeswax 3D printing filaments

• Funding: Eligible for MM-III market linkage grants.

Part 3: Founder’s Action Plan

1. IoT Hive Monitoring

• Step 1: Pilot with KVIC’s 5 IBDCs

• Step 2: Monetize via:

o SaaS (₹100/hive/month)

o Data sales to agri-input companies

2. Pollination Marketplace

• Step 1: Onboard Himachal apple growers & Uttarakhand beekeepers

• Step 2: Integrate with NBHM’s beekeeper registry

Part 4: Cross-Cutting Strategies

Strategy Action Impact

Regulatory Get empaneled as NBHM tech partner Access to 50,000 beekeepers

Funding Apply for Startup India Seed Fund + MM-II grants ₹25L-1Cr capital

Pilots Target NE states (high forest honey potential) 2X subsidy benefits

Part 5: Risk & Mitigation

• Risk: Colony collapse due to pesticides

o Solution: Partner with ICAR for pesticide-sensitive bee breeds

• Risk: Low FPO participation

o Solution: Offer free HACCP certification under MM-III
